What It Is

OnabotulinumtoxinA is an FDA-approved preventive treatment for chronic migraine (15+ headache days/month). Following the evidence-based PREEMPT protocol, 31 micro-injections are placed across 7 muscle groups of the head, neck, and shoulders to block pain-signalling neurotransmitters.

What to Expect

Session takes 15–20 minutes; no anesthesia needed
Fine-needle pinpricks — most patients rate discomfort as mild
Benefits typically begin 2–4 weeks after the first cycle
Full effect judged after 2–3 cycles (24–36 weeks)
Repeated every 12 weeks

Who It Is For

Adults with chronic migraine — 15+ headache days per month with at least 8 migraine days — usually after two oral preventives have not helped enough. Not indicated for episodic migraine.

Aftercare

Return to normal activities immediately. Avoid rubbing injection sites for 24 hours. Temporary neck soreness (~6%) or eyelid droop (~3%) can occur and resolve spontaneously.
