What It Is
A thin needle samples cerebrospinal fluid from the lower back — well below where the spinal cord ends — to diagnose MS (oligoclonal bands), CNS infections, Guillain-Barré syndrome, and idiopathic intracranial hypertension, where it also measures and relieves pressure.

Who It Is For
Suspected MS, meningitis or encephalitis, GBS/CIDP, unexplained headache with papilledema (raised pressure), and selected dementia workups.
Aftercare
Drink fluids and rest the day of the procedure. A position-dependent headache can occur in a minority and is treatable — contact the clinic if it persists beyond 48 hours.
